A 65-year-old woman died Wednesday morning on Maui after being bitten by a shark near Makena State Park.
The attack occurred at a spot called “Dumps,” according to KHON 2.
This is the same area where two attacks occurred in 2013, one of them involving a kayak angler and resulting in a fatality. That year, at least seven attacks–two of them fatal–were reported off Maui.
The 65-year-old Kihei woman had become separated from two friends.
She was pulled from the water by snorkelers but was unresponsive, and efforts by paramedics to revive the victim were unsuccessful. The incident occurred sometime before 9 a.m.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources banned water access in the area and launched an investigation.
