Passengers aboard a whale-watching boat off Dana Point enjoyed a rare great white shark sighting early Thursday afternoon, about three miles offshore.
Capt. Todd Mansur, aboard the Ocean Adventure out of Dana Wharf Whale Watch, estimated the shark's length at 12-14 feet, possibly larger (see photo and video).
It remained at the surface, off the bow with its fin out of the water, for about 10 minutes.
"It had no problem playing near the boat, but I wanted to get closer for a better shot and that's when it darted off," Mansur said, via cellphone, from the vessel. "The passengers were screaming, they were so excited. The conditions couldn't be better."
The sighting occurred during a two-hour noon voyage. Passengers also saw three blue whales, two minke whales and about 2,000 common dolphins.

Hmm.
That distinctive sidewinder gait looks more like a healthy short-fin Mako to me.
