Sea lions are notorious fish stealers, but have you ever seen a killer whale swim casually up to a fishing boat and chomp on an angler's hooked halibut?
It happened somewhere off Alaska, and the proof is in the accompanying video clip, which posted to Facebook on Saturday by The Alaska Life. (Warning: There is brief profanity at the beginning.)
The rare close encounter is impressive, enough so that nearly 4,000 people "liked" the post, and more than 17,000 people shared the clip as of early Monday afternoon.
There were no details about where in Alaska this was videotaped, or to what degree this event was contrived.
For example, were the fishermen using the hooked halibut to lure the killer whale, or orca, close to the boat? If so, how long did they keep the halibut on the line in order to entice the orca?
It's hard to tell what all the banter was about before the killer whale comes into view.
But this much is clear: The halibut was easy pickings.
Good for the Orca. He took what belongs to him, not humans.
