A great white shark measuring an estimated 20 feet was spotted in Monterey Bay on Sunday afternoon by passengers and crew participating in a Blue Ocean Whale Watch tour.
The rare sighting occurred near a pod of bottlenose dolphins about 200 yards from shore near Pajaro Dunes, in the northern portion of the sprawling bay.
A post on the Blue Ocean Facebook page states: "While following [the dolphins] down the beach, a 20-foot great white shark appeared next to our boat! The massive creature circled us a few times allowing us to see its entire silhouette next to the boat. A first-ever experience for everyone on board, including the crew!!"
White sharks have been observed in the area recently researchers conducting overflights, according to the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation.
The accompanying image, via of Blue Ocean, shows the shark swimming in what appears to be very murky water.
