In what represents another blow to tourism in Mazatlan, Carnival has joined the list of cruise lines that have temporarily dropped the Mexican destination because of drug cartel-related violence.
Disney Wonder and Holland America also have stopped visiting Mazatlan.
Carnival, which utilizes the Long Beach- and San Diego-based Carnival Splendor and Carnival Spirit for its Mexico runs, will alter its schedule to allow for more time in Cabo San Lucas at the tip of Baja California and Manzanillo, which is south of Mazatlan on the mainland.
Incidents of violence, though they have not involved cruise ship passengers, have increased recently in and around the Mazatlan port area.
A Carnival spokesperson said in a statement: "We are working closely with the Mexican government and local officials to review their plans to improve security in all of the main tourist areas. Once we are comfortable with their plans and implementation, we expect to return to Mazatlan. We are hopeful that this process can be completed within a short period of time."
