The first two rounds of the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons will be held today at Pipeline on Oahu's North Shore.
Waves are only in the six- to 10-foot range, but a larger swell is supposed to arrive before the final ASP World Tour contest of the season gets into the meat of its schedule for the third round and beyond.
Irons, a three-time world champion whose unexpected death in early November sent the global surfing community into a prolonged period of morning, was born and raised in Hawaii and won the Pipe Masters four times.
His younger brother Bruce, who goes up against Australia's Tom Whitaker in Heat 12 of the first round, will be the sentimental favorite in the event.
The Pipe Masters is the final jewel of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and can be viewed live via webcast.
