A 40-foot humpback whale that had become trapped on a sandbar in the Wadden Sea--and has since perished--apparently was discovered by a kite surfer who jumped the mammal.
The accompanying video shows the kite surfer going airborne as he approached the whale, and returning to investigate before sailing to shore to alert authorities.
Unfortunately the whale, discovered last Wednesday, died Saturday, a day after being given a lethal injection by authorities who determined that it could not be freed from the remote sandbar.
(That determination and the manner by which the rescue attempts were conducted have been sharply criticized.)
Meanwhile, a 30-foot sperm whale died Sunday of unknown causes in Florida waters after it was discovered drifting off the Pompano Beach area.
That case is the subject of a federal probe because two swimmers were photographed next to the dying whale, and one was photographed attempting to ride the mammal.

How sad. The whale didn't survive. how pity.
