Chicago's Shedd Aquarium made headlines two weeks ago when it announced the birth of a Pacific white-sided dolphin, which became the fifth member of its species at the facility.
On Tuesday veterinarians confirmed that the calf is a male and allowed photographers to film the mother (named Piquet) with her calf for the first time.
Ken Ramirez, Shedd's executive vice president of animal care and training, told NBC that the dolphin has become fairly independent, but is still nursing, and has put on 5-10 pounds to weigh about 30 pounds.
"The mom has done such a good job of taking care of the calf that we actually haven’t had to put our hands on the calf at all," Ramirez said.
The pair is not yet on exhibit but if all goes well that could soon change, and Shedd Aquarium will have a very cute new star attraction.
