Before motor sports fans could even digest news that two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon was killed Sunday in a fiery crash in Las Vegas, reports surfaced that offroad racing star Rick Huseman (pictured) also was killed, in the crash of a small plane at nearby Barstow-Daggett Airport.
At the time of this post, details were scant but Huseman's website confirmed the news late Sunday evening, with this statement:
"Tragically, Rick and his brother, Jeff, passed away today in a plane crash. We will post funeral arrangements as soon as they are available. Please keep Michelle and the Huseman family in your prayers."
One report stated that three people aboard the small plane were killed during an attempted emergency landing. His wife Michelle and the couple's baby were not aboard the plane. Huseman, who was 38, had been attempting to return from an event held Saturday night.
He was a longtime star on the offroad circuit. Last year he won the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series Pro-4 Championship and more recently he logged his 50th victory at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, Calif.
For years he had enjoyed passionate support among his many fans. News of his death spread Sunday evening via social media platforms, including the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series Facebook Page.
SpeedZone Los Angeles posted on the page: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, team and fans of Indy Car Champion Race Dan Weldon and Rick Huseman. The racing and motor sports community is deeply saddened by today's tragic losses. They will be missed and both [were] great drivers!
Another post read, "Rick you where a friend and you will be missed. I can not stop crying right now. I know God must have had big planes for you. Our thoughts and prayers go to your family now."
Yet another stated, "R.I.P. RICK HUSEMAN We Will Miss you this Sport will never be the same without you. You were Truly a Champion Weather it was TORC or LOORRS. [No.] 36 Lives on Forever."
Monday, to be sure, will be a dark day for motor sports fans as the mourning process for both athletes really begins.
